Narrative Medicine

In order for medical students and other health care providers to better understand the humanity behind medicine and in their patients, one approach is the study of English literature. William Osler understood the importance literature plays in expanding one's view of the human side of medicine. He recommended a comprehensive list of classic and then contemporary literature that he called essential bedside reading for physicians. This group is for anyone who is interested in complementing their current education in a health care field, medicine or other, through the reading and discussion of English literature. The works we read are collectively chosen by the group and include fiction and non-fiction. After reading a book, we meet to casually discuss the relevance or insight provided by that work. Currently our meeting times are flexible and cater towards as many group members as possible. If you are interested in finding more about this initiative please contact Nicola Smith.
