Research
Medical students at Dalhousie are known for producing excellent clinical and basic science research. Highlights of our research program include the availability of summer research grants for students in first and second year and the opportunity to conduct research during their electives throughout their medical education. Dalhousie medicine provides students with the critical analysis and research skills to be successful and productive physician scientists and evidence based practitioners.
Experiences with Research at Dalhousie Medicine:
Student: Isaac Miao, Med 2 Student
"As someone who had never done research before coming to medical school, I was careful not to get my hopes up when applying for the Summer Student Research Program. In fact, I had just met with my supervisor a couple of weeks before the deadline, and had made backup plans in case my application was not accepted. I received a congratulatory e-mail a few weeks later, and started organizing my ten weeks of summer research. I had a great supervisor in Laboratory Medicine whose office was conveniently down the hall, and I could just drop in when I had a question or concern (which happened quite often!) I was able to take part in every aspect of my research, from digging up samples in the archives and requesting lab results from other hospitals to working with expensive sequencing machines and analyzing our data. I submitted my abstract at the end of the summer, and was surprised to learn it had been accepted to a few conferences! After presenting my poster at the Annual BHCRI Cancer Conference, I will be teleconferencing a platform presentation from Saint John for the IHRTP Interprofessional Health Research Day. I am also working to get a publication in a methods journal - all of this from ten weeks of research. So for those of you who are a bit apprehensive, or don't know how to get some research experience - the Dalhousie Medicine Research Office is a great place to start!"

The DMSS would like to congratulate the following Medical Students who received funding for summer research projects (2011) from the Faculty of Medicine Research Committee, IWK Research Committee or the UIMRF!
