Join us at the first national student conference on the arts and humanities

in medicine, to be held in Vancouver June 24-26, 2011. The summit, entitled

Medicina 2011: The Arts and Healing, will bring together students and

invited speakers from across Canada to discuss their work. The early bird

registration deadline is April 29, 2011. This interdisciplinary conference

is open to any graduate or professional student interested in the

intersection of the humanities and healthcare, including (but not limited

to): medicine, law, nursing, allied health, archaeology, anthropology,

sociology, ethics, history, philosophy, and art history.





We are now inviting abstract submissions, due April 8, 2011. Please review

the submission guidelines on the Medicina website at

This year's summit will be hosted by an organizing committee at the

SUBMISSION CATEGORIES



The mind, the soul, and the body: Art as therapy

Submissions to this category include analyses of the role of art  in patient

care from both a clinical and physiological perspective. They may include a

clinical assessment of the impacts of visual and performing arts, writing,

and music on illness or disease, or examine the neurological response to art

therapy. Work in this category may evaluate the outcomes of art therapy in

special populations and its role in communication and development.



Theory and Practice: Ethics, law, and policy in medicine

This category deals with the definition of medicine and the morality of

medical practice.  Submissions may include topics dealing with epistemology,

political philosophy, and applied ethics. They may take a theoretical

approach to analysis or discuss empirical outcomes of specific policies.



Medicine across cultures & eras

Historical, cultural, and sociological factors all determine the course and

progress of medicine.  Submissions to this category may cover any aspect of

this complex interplay between cultural environments and a broad range of

topics in medicine.



The healing spirit

Physicians are often encouraged to lead by example in finding balance.

Artistic expression is an important outlet for the profound, inspiring,

saddening and inspiring experiences of everyday practice. This category is

for work exploring the effect of art & creativity on physician health,

well-being, and training.
