Everest Day Teaching Initiative
Like climbing a mountain, making healthy lifestyle choices can sometimes be a challenge. Dalhousie Medical students recognize the effects that lifestyle choices, both positive and negative, can have on a person’s future health, and created the Everest Day initiative in order to help promote healthy choices in the younger generations. Since 2002, first and second year students at Dalhousie Medical School reserve time in their busy schedules to share a fun and educational day with local Grade 4 students to promote the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Topics covered range from healthy eating and physical activity to sun safety and the dangers of smoking.
Nova Scotia has some of the highest levels of chronic disease in Canada, often caused by inactivity, poor nutrition and obesity. Dalhousie Medical Students want to do their part in reducing this burden through educating students with a curriculum that is fun and engaging, and will hopefully leave a lasting impression.
